In 1921 the very first edition of the Rorschach® ink blot test, appearing with the title Psychodiagnostik, was published by Swiss publisher Ernst Bircher. The original creator of the test, Dr. Hermann Rorschach, was not only from Switzerland, but also spent a significant amount of time in Berne, where he worked in the Waldau Psychiatric University Hospital. Prior to publication an employee of Ernst Bircher named Hans Huber and Hermann Rorschach spent many sessions together perfecting the construction and actual printing of the Rorschach® ink blot test.
Some 6 years later, in 1927, Hans Huber went on to found his own publishing house named Verlag Hans Huber. He purchased the rights and physical inventory of Psychodiagnostik from Ernst Bircher when it went into liquidation. Since that time Verlag Hans Huber (now known as Hogrefe AG) has been the publisher of what was to become world famous as the Rorschach® Test and the related book Psychodiagnostics.
Right up until the present day, each reprinting of the plates themselves requires enormous care and technical expertise. As experienced Rorschach users know, the precise colouring and shading of the ink blots and their consistency and constancy over a period of decades are core characteristics of the test, characteristics that are absolutely essential both to the validity of results obtained now and also to the long-term scientific reliability and reputation of the test. With the collaboration and advice of the International Society of the Rorschach & Projective Methods (ISR), Hogrefe AG continues to produce the Rorschach® Test plates based on this highly specialised, historical know-how and on information contained in a comprehensive archive of original documents and instructions from Hermann Rorschach. Strict quality controls ensure that the plates produced today continue to have precisely the same quality and appearance as when Hermann Rorschach himself oversaw their production.
Without the historical and technical knowledge mentioned above, it is impossible to reproduce plates in the quality and to the standards that are required for a reliable, reproducible test. For this reason, the original Rorschach® Test plates produced by Hogrefe are the only ones approved by the ISR for use in Rorschach diagnostics.
Some experts estimate that in the entire field of psychology no other single creation has been the subject of a greater number of scientific papers and that probably no other psychological test has been administered to more millions of people throughout the world than the Rorschach® Test. The ISR and Hogrefe AG continually strive to maintain the quality of this valuable instrument for the innumerable practitioners who currently rely on it as fundamental technique, and also for those who will utilize it in the future.
